This summer Phonak will be celebrating no less than 70 years of continual achievement and innovation in audiology and we’d love to share this extraordinary milestone with all of you! In just a few years we have built a strong presence in the UK market, thanks to our superb products, our exceptional Warrington-based manufacturing team, and the extraordinary trust and support we have enjoyed from practitioners up and down the country.
Phonak was founded in 1947 and was dedicated from the outset to taking on the most difficult hearing challenges. Coincidentally, the founding of Phonak wasn’t the only momentous event of that year. On 14th October 1947, a loud thunder roared in the clear skies of California’s Mojave Desert as US Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager flew an experimental rocket-powered plane faster than the speed of sound for the first time ever!
We like to say that the sound barrier was broken twice in 1947; once by Captain Yeager and once by the talented engineers who set up Phonak with a passionate commitment to providing a better life for those with hearing challenges!
As we celebrate our 70th anniversary, breaking barriers is still at the core of what we do. And it isn’t just about work; it’s an attitude to life! We’re proud that our partners and employees share this attitude, with their incredible dedication to their profession and their commitment to always putting the customer first.
What can you expect from the incoming celebrations? You’ll be seeing a brand new anniversary logo on all of our marketing literature, and we’re also launching an exciting new website that’s dedicated to news, updates and reviews of events marking the anniversary.
There’ll be inspiring stories about customers’ life changing moments that switched their enjoyment of life back on. Through a series of interviews right here on our blog, you’ll also have the opportunity to (virtually!) meet some of the people who work behind the scenes to bring you our exceptional Phonak products.
If our anniversary has set you wondering how it all started here at Phonak, read on to enjoy a timeline of the key events over our last 70 years.
In 1950, Phonak released its first product – the body-worn Phonak Alpina hearing aid. In 1970, the company created a sensation by launching the Phonette, the world’s first behind-the-ear hearing aid. AudioZoom, an innovative multi-microphone technology followed in 1994.
In 1999 Phonak made a pioneering move into digital technology, defining the path for future developments throughout the whole audiology instrument sector. Released that year, Claro was the first fully digital Phonak hearing aid, and it featured an integrated FM receiver.
Another Phonak milestone was the introduction of Lyric, the first and only 100% invisible hearing aid, which was released in 2011. The groundbreaking Lyric can be worn 24/7 for months at a time and, because of its invisibility when in use, it has been dubbed “the contact lens for the ear”.
Roger, a new digital wireless standard that bridges the understanding gap, in noise and over distance, by wirelessly transmitting the speaker’s voice directly to the listener, was introduced in 2013. Soon after that, Audéo B-R was released as the first hearing aid to feature a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery providing 24 hours of uninterrupted use.
Earlier this year, the Virto B-Titanium hearing aid, which is fabricated from medical-grade titanium, reached the market and it is already enjoying tremendous success thanks to its discreet, strong, lightweight build.
For 70 years Phonak has remained true to its spirit through the creation of life-changing hearing solutions. We truly appreciate and thank you for your trust and loyalty throughout the years. Together we will continue to push the boundaries of innovation so that we ensure ‘life is on’ for everyone, irrespective of their hearing challenges!
